Horse hair sample

The hair from the mane or tail is best suited for a horse hair sample. If hairs from the mane and tail as well as the coat are to be examined, they should be packaged separately. Hairs of a length of 2 to 3 cm are usually sufficient for the analysis. To be safe, a length of approx. 5 cm is recommended.

Sampling of horse hair:

  • If possible, do not use chrome-plated or rusty scissors. Stainless steel scissors are best.
  • The horse hair does not have to contain hair roots.
  • For best results, horse hair should be cut close to the body.
  • Approximately 10 horse hairs are sufficient for the hair sample.

Examples of good hair samples

  • Put the cut horse hair in a clean bag or envelope. Label the sealed bag or envelope with the following information:

What happens to the hair sample after it is sent in?

After the horse hair sample is available, a new “patient” is created in the database. In addition to the usual data such as name of the horse, patient number, owner / holder of the horse as well as address and contact data, the hair of the horse is read in by means of a laboratory device.

All information available at this time is coded, i.e. the information is stored in a database as a numerical code.

Thus, all information about the state of the organism is available until the coding is deleted or overwritten by a new hair sample. The submitted hair sample is no longer needed after the coding and storage. The hair is disposed of.
